I'm sure you'll find that 9 out of 10 times, the negative news dominates."

The reason for this, according to me, is the "negativity, attention, reaction, and reward" cycle that social media platforms have built their business models around.
- Negativity catches our attention more easily, as our brains are wired to constantly scan for potential threats in our environment.
- This attention then leads to reactions, such as comments, shares, and engagement, which social media algorithms reward.
- The more engagement a piece of negative content receives, the more it is amplified and promoted, perpetuating the cycle.
As a result, social media has become a breeding ground for trolling, cyberbullying, and the spread of misinformation and outrage.This dynamic has even led to the rise of content creators who have built their entire careers on producing "extremely negative" content, as it is the surest path to gaining attention and popularity on these platforms.
The Dangers of Negative Social Media Consumption
The consequences of this negative cycle can be far-reaching and damaging, both for individuals and society as a whole. Here I highlight several key issues:
- Normalization of Harmful Behavior : When negative and even abusive behavior is constantly rewarded on social media, it can become normalized and accepted as a common norm. This can lead to a desensitization to harmful conduct and a lack of empathy for those on the receiving end.
- Negative Impact on Mental Health : Constant exposure to negative content and the pressure to curate a perfect online persona can take a significant toll on an individual's mental well-being, leading to issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

The first step is to take a critical look at the accounts and content you engage with on social media. I encourage you to ask yourself a simple question: "Does this person or content provide any real value to me, or am I just consuming it for the sake of entertainment or gossip?"
If the answer is the latter, it might be time to unfollow or even delete those accounts, "Find your own tribe" connect with people and content that align with your values and interests, and that inspire you to take positive action.
2. Shift Your Intention
Instead of mindlessly scrolling through your feed, I encourage you to be more intentional about the time you spend online.
For example, if you find yourself drawn to "Reels" or other short-form video content, I suggest being mindful of how much time you're spending on it and whether it's truly adding value to your life.It's easy to lose track of time when consuming this type of content, leaving you feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from the real world.
To combat this,focus on the positive and constructive aspects of social media. Instead of getting drawn into negative debates or criticizing others, they suggest finding ways to uplift and encourage the people and content you engage with."If you can't say something kind, say nothing at all."
3. Promote Positivity and Collaboration
Finally, I encourage you to actively participate in creating a more positive social media landscape. Instead of just consuming content, they suggest finding ways to contribute and collaborate with others who share your values and goals.
For example, if you're passionate about environmental issues, you can use social media to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations, share educational content, and even coordinate offline actions and initiatives. By focusing on solutions and positive change, you can help shift the narrative away from negativity and towards more constructive dialogue and real-world impact.
